Early Life and the Legal Career That Almost Was
Before he was a household name in global television, Can Yaman was on track to become an international corporate lawyer. Raised in Istanbul, he possesses a diverse cultural background, with family roots extending to Albania and North Macedonia.
Yaman excelled academically from a young age. He attended the prestigious Liceo Italiano di Istanbul, an Italian-language high school where he graduated at the top of his class. Driven by his academic strengths, he spent time in the United States as an exchange student in Ohio before enrolling in Yeditepe University. He earned his law degree in 2012.
(Top of Class) (Graduated 2012) (Tax & M&A Associate)
Following his graduation, Yaman began working as a tax and M&A associate at the corporate firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He even authored tax articles for a prominent financial newspaper. However, during a summer vacation in Bodrum, a chance encounter with acting managers redirected his career path. Realizing that desk-bound office routines did not suit his energetic personality, he left the legal profession to pursue acting, though he retains his law firm connections in Istanbul.
The Breakthrough: From Turkish Rom-Coms to International Icon
Can Yaman entered the Turkish television industry—frequently referred to as Dizi—in 2014 with a supporting role in Gönül İşleri. His natural screen presence quickly earned him leading roles in several romantic dramas:
İnadına Aşk (In Spite of Love - 2015): Marked his first major leading role as Yalin Aras, a tech executive hiding his true identity.
Dolunay (Full Moon - 2017): Starring alongside Özge Gürel, Yaman played Ferit Aslan, a strict businessman who falls for his personal chef. This project gave him his first taste of widespread international popularity.
The Turning Point: Erkenci Kuş (Daydreamer)
Yaman’s career reached monumental heights with the 2018 romantic comedy series Erkenci Kuş (Daydreamer). Playing Can Divit—a free-spirited, rugged, world-traveling photographer—opposite actress Demet Özdemir, Yaman completely reinvented his screen image.
The show became a massive hit across Italy, Spain, Greece, and Latin America. His performance earned him the Golden Butterfly Award for Best Actor in a Romantic Comedy in 2018 and the international Murex d'Or in 2019. He followed this success with Bay Yanlış (Mr. Wrong) in 2020, reuniting with Özge Gürel and solidifying his global fanbase.
The Italian Transition and Multi-Lingual Advantage
One of the defining features of Can Yaman’s career is his linguistic versatility. He is a certified polyglot, fluent in:
* Turkish (Native)
* SpanishLeveraging his absolute fluency in Italian, Yaman relocated to Rome in early 2021 to expand his career beyond the Turkish market. This strategic shift enabled him to bypass the traditional subtitle barrier and star directly in Western European productions.
Spanish | El Laberinto de las Mariposas
His first major Italian project was the lighthearted crime drama Viola come il mare (Violet Like the Sea), starring alongside Italian actress Francesca Chillemi. Yaman played Francesco Demir, a charismatic police inspector. The show achieved impressive viewership shares on Italy's Canale 5 and was widely distributed internationally.
Evolution Into an Action Hero
Yaman has shifted away from the traditional romantic comedy typecast, transitioning into high-budget, multi-national historical epics and thrillers.
Filmed entirely in English, El Turco is a historical action-adventure series produced by Turkey's Ay Yapım. Yaman portrays Hasan Balaban, a real-life 17th-century Ottoman Janissary soldier. Following the Battle of Vienna in 1683, Balaban finds refuge in the Italian Alpine village of Moena, eventually leading a local peasant revolt against feudal oppression. The production features an international cast from nine countries and broke digital streaming records upon its global launch.
Sandokan (2025/2026)
Yaman took on the iconic role of the fictional 19th-century pirate in Sandokan, a high-profile, English-language television reboot produced by the European studio Lux Vide. Based on the beloved adventure novels by Emilio Salgari, the series follows the "Tiger of Malaya" as he clashes with colonial forces in Southeast Asia. Co-starring Ed Westwick and John Hannah, the series achieved excellent prime-time ratings upon its debut on Rai 1.
Expansion into Spanish Television
Further diversifying his portfolio, Yaman signed on for his first Spanish-language project, El Laberinto de las Mariposas (The Labyrinth of the Butterflies) with Secuoya Studios. Filmed in the Canary Islands, the romantic thriller stars Yaman as Kaplan, a framed secret agent on the run.
Philanthropy and Personal Philosophy
Beyond the screen, Yaman is active in charitable endeavors. He founded the Can Yaman for Children ETS association, an Italian-registered charity that raises funds to assist adolescents and young patients in the Italian public health system. His charity also extended critical aid to victims affected by the catastrophic 2023 earthquakes in Turkey. Funding is supported in part by the sales of his official autobiography, Sembra strano anche a me (It Seems Strange to Me Too), and his personal fragrance line, Can Yaman Mania.
When speaking about his personal philosophy and rise to fame, Yaman remains grounded. He famously deactivated his 11-million-follower Instagram account in late 2024 to minimize digital distractions and focus entirely on the rigorous physical training required for Sandokan. He later returned to the platform to share updates on his global releases. He rejects standard celebrity labels, preferring to view himself as a disciplined professional whose multilingual education laid the groundwork for an unpredictable international journey.
